The Breaker
Seems like a long wait, from the previous versions.
The Peter Ash books came highly recommended, and starting the latest in the series, I was wondering what I missed, perhaps there was one that got left out? I don’t know, but I didn’t get all the reference points to previous adventures. Thought I read them all so far.
Doesn’t stop the quick pace the novel sets, action, deftly described, and PTSD playing a major role. That seems important.
“When the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, it weeded out companies with catchy domain names and slick websites but no real business plan or paying customers.” Page 50.
There is that. I was along for the ride, even then.
Pause, an update? This is like the A-Team TV franchise?
There’s an opening quote from author William Gibson, a nod, then, as the story starts to unfurl, one of his protagonists comes to mind. A nod, an homage, perhaps? Better yet, a cult-favorite, with a link? Snowcrash.
The phrase, “We have the technology,” is applicable, but there is a substantive echo, possible allusion, doubt it is wholesale theft, but certainly the gem of an idea, echoing back from before.
It never ceases to amaze me, but in this case, the hero — no deus ex machina — good, fun, addictive novel.
