Come Monday

Mechanical and Material changes, part the second:
Current “best practices in e-mail marketing” guidelines, somewhat dated material, really, but the accepted industry standard is Tuesday, after midnight but before the opening bell, in other words, between 1 and 4 AM, Eastern Standard, that’s the optimal time to launch an e-mail. Not caught in the Monday back at the office crush, and avoids the Wednesday overload blues, giving a chance for that e-mail to be read.

Here’s the problem, I get a spike in traffic anytime I send the weekly (free) e-mail. Then, too, the current e-mail has a single horoscope in it, the current – or up-coming – scope for the new week. Tuesday is a bit premature, in my estimation; although, I did, at one time, drop the mail on Tuesdays at noon.

With the current arrangement, I’m letting it fly at whenever I spool it up, seeing what works best. Still, it only goes on Wednesday, not before. Then, Wednesday night, at 10 PM (local time for me), the new horoscopes roll out. Post.

Some days, I mean, frequently, I’m still scrambling to get corrections and links working right up until the scopes post. It can be tiresome, and naysayers, critics and similar vermin are cordially invited to post their own, weekly column.

Previously, I wrote that I was planning to cut back a little, just do a single post for the Monday update. Originally, in a nod to the New Age Numbers people, and, because, “It amuses me,” I was targeting 11:11 AM, Monday morning.

Server traffic spikes. Hard on hardware. Then, the item I want at the top of the page is the column, as much as possible. So if I update Tuesday instead of Monday, same morning time, I’m guessing, the “Horoscopic Weekly Video” is only at the top of the site from Tuesday noon until Wednesday evening.

When I hit a web page, I see headlines and ads across the top. Ignore them. Side bars, one or both sides, ignore them unless I want specific info, like birthdays, contact, and such.

I like text. I like a story. I listened to a news article the other morning, and I can’t recall any of the details. If I had read a short paragraph about it, I’m sure I would have some facts and maybe a link, if it was interesting enough.

Thinking like me, then, the column is what I want “featured” most. So, to get that working, the audio/video update is now rescheduled to Tuesday morning, and that means, for most of the week, and the weekend, the written word trumps all.

So the new arrangement, the new schedule, the Monday update is scrapped and I’ll do it on Tuesday. The video is subscriber-only, while, with java-script enabled, the audio is still free. As is the top of the weekly horoscope.

Come Monday.
