Renewal Notice

Always a conundrum, what to do when faced with a website domain name that is set to expire.

On the one side of the equation, it’s a long name, and fallen into disuse except as a pointer to astrofish.net. So there is that, but the title itself, always a reminder, and remembrance, of times and places past.

Fond memories, but as a decision based on direct and indirect dollar volume? The name should be released. I should let go of it. Adds nothing more professionally. Adds no value. Not bringing me any joy, either.

The emotional resonance is deep within my soul, from a time in my life when life was simpler, and then, a notation from twitter, a short comment about how Austin was the new SF. Certainly a sentiment I grasp, having been there in the “bad, old days.”

“Wouldn’t Austin be more of the Berkeley set?”

So the renewal, it’s, like, you know, $15 per annum, some discount for multiple years, I don’t recall all the details, but I have researched the Domain Name Register options — again — and I’ve arrived at the understanding that the current company still works best for me.

The inclusive price offers security that is an add-on elsewhere. I did find one place that was marginally cheaper, but the structure was splitting the offer into two parts, domain name registration then security, and while maybe a dollar less? Twice as many steps.

I like simplicity.

For several years, www.TwoMeatTuesday.com has a merely resolved to astrofish.net/TMT (website pointer or permanent forward — 301). At one point in my history, the great minds of the wide world web suggested that every book stile should have its own URL and web page.

Wrestling with the question about the renewal, looking at my thoughts as I type, that reminds me that I’ve been on a lockdown crusade to make all of this easier. Less to manage is more manageable. There’s an axiom in there, I’m sure.

The original renewal notice was closely followed by the rock shop in Austin temporarily shuttering its practitioner program. So no new Tuesday options on the schedule, no commute to Austin, and perhaps, a hint from the universe that it is time to let that one go of that name.

I’m sure I’ll be back in Austin — but it might be a sign that my great affection for that one name — might be time to let it go.

Previously, the name was registered for multiple years, but I’ve gotten a little more circumspect about wholesale subscription and spending dollars that aren’t needed in one particular area.

Some might say “cheap,”
but I prefer “frugal” or “financially responsible.”

In “internet years,” kind of like dog years, only far more exponential in iterations, think: Moore’s Law — or was it Osborne? Either way, in “internet years.” I’ve been at this for over decade with that one name.

By now, I will have replaced all the links in my own, internal texts, and pages. Might still be buried in an e-book or two, but that is less and less traffic these days.

I arrived at this decision, the first time, more than a year back, realizing that my favorite child, the text, Two-Meat Tuesday, while it is one that I am most fond of, that doesn’t mean that it is a commercial success. Certainly an artistic success in my own mind, and a pleasure for me, but still, not necessarily a big hit with anyone else.

Sales don’t make enough to cover the price of the name, not now.

If I learned anything the last year? Less is certainly more.
