Flight: a Novel
Flight – Sherman Alexie
Having been around the American Southwest almost all of my life, the author’s name and canon of work is familiar. Tried, a while back and never connected. However, late at night on Amazon Prime reading, the novel surfaced a second time, and I gave it another try, devouring nearly half in one sitting.
“It was father love and father shame and father rage that killed Hamlet.” Chapter 18.
Time-surfing stories. Time-lapse literature. A single narrative as the protagonist bounces backwards and forwards in time, partially along a Native American ancestral trail.
The sins of the father visited upon the sons.
There is always hope, and the tone has strongly mythic qualities, which makes me wonder if there are some myths I’m unfamiliar with, sprinkled into this tale.
For me, it was a quick read, and rather enjoyable. I’ll have to see about more.
Magical realism? Yeah, whatever. Excellent, lyric writing about pain and deep, emotional scars.
