Two words: Southern Gothic.

And that term, Southern Gothic, made more amusing since, is the setting really Southern? In its era, I suppose, that part of the country was called “Southern,” but I’m more inclined to think “mid-west,” which again, to me, is such s funny term. Starting in Dallas (Texas) and drawing a line straight up and down, I tend to think of that as “East.” East Texas, Eastern Seaboard, Atlantic, Appalachia, and deep south. East.

Matter of perspective.
