It has to do with web page speed. All about content delivery.
Two years ago, I was getting throttled on the old server, a shared hosting environment, because I was burning too much bandwidth. Images burn bandwidth.
As do interactive wiggling bits. Stuff that makes a weekly column roll over in a timely fashion, all the moving parts.
When I looked around, one hosting site called “iPage.com” looked interesting. Turns out to be priced about the same as other shared hosting systems, and I passed. There was an ad, not long ago, promising a full year of hosting for a dollar. Too good to be true? I’m not sure.
I’m setting up the next new home for this web journal.
So for the last year, year and half, I’ve been on a Hostgator VPS. kramerwetzel.com was running on it, on a partition, more as an experiment, rather than a full-fledged site. I moved it over to that iPage company, for a dollar. Immediately, I recognized the backend, even some of the IP numbers, as looking like the old FatCow.com company.
Running a site on FatCow, though, and I administer a number of sites there, service is good. Low-volume sites, no problem, like astrowhore.org, and GraceThePsychicLady.com. I have high hopes for iPage.com, but so far, it’s been slow. I doubt this web journal will ever get a huge amount of traffic, as it’s merely an experimental and experiential side project with few rules and mostly no guidelines. I try to not swear, but that’s about it.
Speed is the issue. The new server is way slower, or so it seems.
FatCow is a product I believe in, as I’ve used their services, successfully, and I can recommend them. While I have a love/hate with Hostgator’s various support teams, they are located in Texas, and I’ve been able to solve problems. Little problem with uptime, and speed? Site runs fast.
Speed matters.
So with the experiment? I’m not sure yet.
