Why should it be studied?
Astrology is the ancient science of astronomy combined with fortune telling components. The original use of astrology was to help determine the best time to plant and harvest for a culture that was transitioning from hunter/gatherer to agrarian.
Most of the astrology’s earliest roots are shrouded in myth, pseudo-myth, and historical guesses. The ancient cultures of the middle east were steeped in this science from patient observations, and some of the earliest extant written symbols, precursors to alphabets, are about astronomy/astrology.
How long has it been around?
Earliest examples, outside of Stonehenge and Mesopotamia suggest at least 3K BCE.
What can Astrology can tell you?
In one version — typically what I practice — astrology defines components that help make up personalities, the building blocks of who we are. As such, astrology helps anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of themselves.
How many types are there?
I’ve studied “Western” astrology and it is the basis of my practice. However, there is also Vedic, Chinese, Meso-American, and Native American. And that’s just for starters.
How astrology evolved?
It takes me two hours to calculate an astrology birth chart by hand, and even then, some of the calculations might be a little off as I’m rusty at this. However, I have a phone, a tablet, and laptop that can all cast an astrology chart about as fast as I can type in the data.
The placement of the planets is an exact since. The meaning — interpretation — is an art.
In the last few years, the ability to cast a chart has become quite commonplace, with websites dedicated to that function. Interpretations are still an art form.
And is Pluto sill used?
I use at as an astrological object. I call it a “planet,” but its status is debatable as the exact term, but for my work? It is a definitely “a thing.”
How does it make up your personality?
Astrology can describe various components and gives words to attach to various elements in personal psyche, and from here, the way it is interpreted can benefit the individual, akin to “Knowing thyself.”
What kind of career are there if any in this kind of study?
The careers in this field are limited to local practitioners and the few, nationally — internationally — recognized authors, lecturers, teachers, and researchers.
Class Project
Astrology is a fascinating study with a myriad of interlacing parts that can be quite intriguing, and then, moving forward, there’s always the ongoing question of the planets and how that might have an impact on the current day.
