Food Porn: Ice Cream

Sig File

It’s a variation on Food Porn, Ice Cream. This was from Sister in CA. Small batch, sold in a glass canning jar, really good stuff. The first one that caught my eye was Toffee-Crunch, but I have to use Vanilla as a baseline.

Amy’s Mexican Vanilla is still the “Go To” defender of the realm. It is, and will always be, the best. It’s an “Austin thang, y’all might not understand.”

Amy’s Mexican Vanilla is deeper, richer, more nuanced and better flavor than regular old vanilla. Sweeter, tangier, more vanilla-esque than regular white ice cream.

So I was forced to compare Honeymoon Ice Cream to the reigning champ in my camp.

Since my approach to horoscopes was much shaped by Amy’s Ice Cream, I’m sure there are extant allusions in the material, grab Jo’s espresso then add a scoop or two of Amy’s… Then, the next morning, the empty Jo’s cup still reeking of Mexican Vanilla and espresso, a leftover aroma that colors the world, my world, with whiter whites plus more brilliant shades of pastels. Deep in a trailer park in South Austin.

I wouldn’t indulge in Amy’s more than once a week, but knowing it was available — always a reassuring nod. Truly, a special brand of comfort food.

Sister introduced me to “Honeymoon Ice Cream.” Specialty, micro-brew (style) foodie food. Rather tasty. No, delicious. No, nirvana-like. No, just way better than regular ice cream.

Starts with free-range, pesticide-free, holistic Jersey cows that make sweeter milk. All-natural ingredients. Perfect combination. The sweeter milk is marginally better than Amy’s, but the Mexican Vanilla still has an edge, as a sweeter, ‘more vanilla’ vanilla.

One was Tahitian Vanilla, another was “Strawberries and Tarragon.” Sounded weird, but the combination — per Sister’s behest — outstandingly good.

Honeymoon Ice Cream

As far as Food Porn and Ice Cream go, Amy’s is still the reigning monarch, as Amy (Virgo) should be Queen, not king. As far as an example that passes the taste test goes, though, Honeymoon Ice Cream is a delicious, Northern California alternative to the best in Texas.

Big bonus points for their packaging: canning jars. Inspired touch of class to use glass.

Preserve the flavor better, easier to recycle. Looks cooler in the cooler.
