Nueces

I like the Apple iPhone built in weather app just fine. Doesn’t matter if I’m in Seattle, New Mexico, or just Port A, I get “weather at a glance.” Some rain, some sun, temp, and not much in prognostication. Works for me.

Running joke, as far as I’m concerned, the local weather guys in San Antonio, but recently, an Air Force guy clued me in —

“Weather here comes from all sides, cold from the north, wet from either the east, the Gulf or even the Pacific. Weird. All directions.”

So I crossed the line, the Nueces River, as it wanders back and forth, into Nueces County (Corpus Christi, TX). Roll past “Southern Mineral Road,” “Valero Way,” and “Corn Products Road,” through the “refinery rings,” with the acres and acres of windmills visible to the south and the east.

Looked down at my phone.

Weather app usually gives a city, like Seattle, or El Paso. Instead, it just said, “Nueces.” Nueces County. Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas. The Port A ferry. Nueces.

Oil boom, ongoing. Almost strange to see a huge fireball of natural gas flare, dancing orange against the South Texas afternoon, the heat shimmering off the intense flame.

There’s always one. The first big one got away, but the next few hours was “tough fishing,” only it wasn’t too tough.
